Caminante, no hay camino,

se hace el camino al andar.

-Antonio Machado (read the whole poem and translation here)

Un poco sobre el libro

¡Bienvenides a Al andar! This open textbook was named for the poem by Antonio Machado quoted above. “The path is made by walking” in language learning, and also in open education. This book is a work in progress. It is being used for the first time in Spring 2025 in Spanish 2010 (Intermediate Spanish) at the University of Virginia.

The book is organized into thematically related units. The centerpiece of each unit are the “Lecciones,” written and oral texts that engage readers with the Spanish-speaking world. The texts were chosen to represent a variety of geographical regions and perspectives, recognizing that the “Spanish-speaking world” is so astoundingly diverse that no textbook can do more than scratch its surface. Each text is accompanied by a pre-reading activity and a guided interpretation worksheet, as well as exercises which focus on the unit vocabulary and grammatical structures within the text. “Referencia” sections in each unit provide more detail on specific structures and ample practice activities ranging from closed-ended self-check grammar exercises to open-ended listening, reading, writing and speaking practice.

I hope that Al andar helps you along your Spanish learning journey. ¡Que disfruten el camino!
