Letter to Students
Chapter 7 and 8
Dear Readers,
We hope that by reading Chapter 7, you gain a greater understanding of what land means to the Monacan people. In this chapter, you will follow alongside Maverick and Nana as they discuss the past, present, and future stories about their ancestral home. Some issues this chapter addresses, like colonization and the mistreatment of burial mounds, may be new and harder to understand. These are sensitive topics, but it is important that you learn about the impact they had and continue to have on the Monacan Nation.
As you read, consider these questions:
What does land mean to you? Land can include your house, your neighborhood park, or your best friend’s house.
How do you help preserve the land that we live on? Do you recycle your plastic water bottles and paper? Do you turn off your lights when you leave your room?
What are burial mounds? Why are they important to the Monacan Nation?
We hope that from reading Chapter 8, you gain a greater understanding of not only the Monacan culture and traditions, but the stories of other Nations as well. Through writing this chapter, we have been able to understand so much about others and how, even though we may celebrate different traditions, we share resilience. With all of that being said, we hope you enjoy the end of Maverick and Nana’s story!
Stay curious,
Emma, Paige, Elizabeth, and Alex
