6 United Campus Workers of Virginia (UCW-VA)
United Campus Workers (UCW) works to build powerful voices among higher education employees across the country. UCWVA-UVA is a coalition of workers at the University of Virginia organizing employees to speak out on the unfair working conditions they face while bearing much of the burden of keeping the University running.
The union began organizing during the summer of 2020 and has focused primarily on the concerns of graduate students. One of their most significant campaigns, #CutTheChecks, launched in January 2023 in response to graduate student workers facing a pattern of late and inaccurate payments from the University.
UCW chapters across Virginia are currently lobbying at the state level around a number of priority issues, including paid family/medical leave, a $15 minimum wage, early childhood education, and, most importantly, an end to Virginia’s ban on collective bargaining for public-sector workers.
