5 The Graduate Labor Union (GLU) at the University of Virginia

Inspired by the Labor Action Group’s historic achievement of an $8 minimum wage for University workers in October 2000, graduate students working as teaching and research assistants at UVA began to advocate for appropriate compensation for their labor. Students from across the College of Arts & Sciences campaigned for health care coverage, better pay, and visibility of their labor on Grounds.

What started as a small group of graduate students rallying their peers to attend Graduate Labor Association (GLA) meetings eventually evolved into the formally organized Graduate Labor Union (GLU) in March 2002, which later became affiliated with the Communication Workers of America (CWA).
