What You Need to Know
Authors and contributors are responsible for making their works web accessible in accordance with:
- The University Information Technology Accessibility Policy (IRM-008)
- The Web Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2 or higher)
Pressbooks itself is built on the WordPress platform, which supports accessible authoring.
For details on platform accessibility, see the Pressbooks Accessibility Statement.
Why Accessibility Compliance Matters
In addition to the University having a long standing committment to providing web accessible resources, beginning April 2026, all digital publications must meet the updated Title II requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
These updates strengthen federal expectations for web and mobile accessibility.
For more information, see:
Justice Department to Publish Final Rule to Strengthen Web and Mobile App Access for People with Disabilities (Apr 8, 2024)
If the Pressbooks Support Team is made aware of a publication not meeting web accessibility standards, they may temporarily unpublish or restrict access until the work is brought into compliance. This will always happen in coordination with the author or contributor, with the goal of ensuring compliance and preserving access for all users.
